What Coaching is not!

Coaching is none of the following :

  Structured Training, i.e. Classroom Learning

Structured training relates to a fixed agenda of learning & a prepared approach to making that learning happen.
Coaching is more flexible, & is driven according to your objectives. We will both influence the direction & content of sessions. Coaching also places real responsibility for learning on the individual & encourages learning to continue after the session.

Therapy, psychoanalysis, psychotherapy

Whilst coaching is not therapy, & should not be viewed as therapy, it does provide a viable alternative to people who may have previously considered some form of counselling to resolve a situation. For example, coaching promotes a greater self-awareness, & fuller appreciation of our own situations & circumstances. Sometimes, change can be promoted by a simple shift in perspectives. Barriers of self-belief such as ‘I can’t’ or ‘I don’t’ can be challenged in order to encourage fresh approaches & ideas.

A way of someone else solving your problems for you

Coaching is based on the principle that an individual is ultimately responsible for their lives & the results they’re getting.  If we acknowledge that we are responsible for something, it follows that we have power & influence over it.  For example, if you’re not getting the results at work that you want, a coach might encourage you to:-

  • Understand that situation more clearly
  • Develop new ideas or approaches for such situations
  • Take constructive action that gets you the results you want.
Our style of coaching is known as ‘non-directional’. This means that we will not instruct you to go and do something specific, or go & do it for you.

You have all the resources & power within you to be able to make decisions on what action to take & what direction your life will go.  By questioning, challenging & supporting you, I will increase your comfort zone & your confidence to provide you with the solutions which are right for you.

  Ships?
Sure I’ll sail them.
Show me the boat,
If it’ll float,
I’ll sail it.

Men?
Yes I’ll love them.
If they’ve got the style,
To make me smile, I’ll love them.

Life?
‘Course I’ll live it,
Let me have breath,
Just till my death,
& I’ll live it.

Failure?
I’m not ashamed to tell it,
I never learnt to spell it,
Not Failure
